Ilford Sportsman - Jem or Junker? Ian Rance, Jun 0.
I have two Ilford ? Sportsman? cameras in my collection, but both are. CLA. Before I use time in doing this I was wondering if. Sportsman and whether they. CLA will take. Mine have the 4. Dakron lens. I have seen no info on the Sportsman camera range - .
On the other hand they. Any opinions welcome. Cheers, Ian- UKP C Headland, Jun 0. This was the first 3. I used, after I moved on from a 1. The one I had was a guess focus model. I got very good results from it, others thought so too, especially when they weren't aware (especially the stuck up snobs in a photography group!) what camera I used for the photos : -).
I nearly always used colour negative and guessed exposure and focus, although my both myself and my dad did use slide from time to time. They are very cheap on ebay so suspect it is not worth the cost of a CLA unless they have sentimental value. They are quiet though, and like practically any camera, it is the person behind the lens that "takes good pictures". PS with that photography group, my photos always got good ratings when I submitted the photos anonymously..)Ian Rance, Jun 0. Thanks for that P C.
Out of interest, do you know what sort of well known camera they were a rival to? Were they Olympus Trip level or a bit higher? No, they don't have sentimental value - they were in a box of swollen cardboard box cameras that an elderly neighbour had down the cellar which I saved from the dumpster. Perhaps I will try *Bay for a go- er. Ian. H. P., Jun 0. My wife used one of these for many years and she has a fair few slides from that time. My opinion of the Sportsman is that it was a good workhorse camera, probably a bit better made than most of the competition like the Boots Beirette and more or less in the same class as the later economy offerings from Zeiss and Agfa.

I wouldn't put a Sportsman in quite the same class as a Trip or similar Japanese cameras of the 'fities although it wouldn't be far off that. Mike Elek, Jun 0. Does this camera have push- button focus? I owned one of these briefly a few years ago. Pretty sturdy build. Never had the chance to use it and eventually I stripped it for parts. Ian Rance, Jun 0.
Mike. I think that the push- button focus model is called the Sports. MASTER as opposed to Sports. MAN (but I stand corrected if anyone knows otherwise). One of mine has a (non- functioning) rangefinder, the other uses guess focussing.

Both have spent more time than is good for them in a damp cellar! There is a supposedly functioning Sportsmaster on *Bay at the moment actually. Ian. Mike Elek, Jun 0. Ahh, that's the one. Ian, thanks for the reminder.
Peter Naylor, Jun 1. Hi, Ian I'm afraid I'd go for the latter description (junker!), to be honest.
Their 3. 5mm cameras from the 6. German Dacoras, a company who weren't exactly rivalling Leitz for quality or design.
I had to do some research about Ilford for a magazine article, and some interesting stuff came up about them. Until the late 4. Kodak and AGFA and get into the camera side of things too.
So, two very nice 3. British- built cameras resulted, but from totally different ends of the spectrum. The higher end model was the Witness, a really innovative quality Leica- inspired CRF camera with a few good ideas of its own. Unfortunately, not many were made, and they're worth a small fortune if you can find one.
The other Ilford 3. Advocate (are we detecting a legal theme here?), a far more basic camera but still with some nice innovative design, like a standard 3. By 1. 96. 0 it seems Ilford had given up on British production of cameras, apart from a few plastic cheapies, so they Did a Deal with Dacora which is where your Sportsman, plus the Sportsmaster, Sporti, Sportina, etc, came in.
